Use Your Credit Card For Purchases in Ecuador

The Pro-Ecuador BLOG has moved. Our news address is www.living-in-ecuador-blog.com

Note: This post applies to our readers with US based credit card accounts.

If you have spent any time outside of the United State since 1996 you have most likely received an invitation to participate in a class action lawsuit regarding foreign currency exchange fees. Link here.

The currency of Ecuador is the United States dollar. No currency exchange means no foreign currency exchange fees. I use my credit card for almost everything in Ecuador and if dinner costs $20, that is exactly the amount that is charged to my credit card.

You can use credit cards in Ecuador for almost everything from buying movie tickets to paying your telephone bill.

Jason,

Does that include debit cards also? We have shunned credit cards for years now and only use cash or debit cards.Thanks.

Hello,

If your debit card has the Mastercard or Visa logo then it can be used just like a credit car anywhere in the world. However, you will not be able to make PIN based debit card transactions in Ecuador.
